Obverse description Central field entirely occupied by a multi-line Arabic inscription in bold thuluth script, giving the royal titles and name of Shah Ismail I. The legend reads the honorific titles 'al-Sultan al-Adil' (the Just Sultan) and 'Abu al-Muzaffar Shah Ismail Bahadur Khan al-Safawi', followed by the mint name 'Zarb Urdu' (struck at the Royal Camp). The inscription fills the flan to its irregular edges, with no border or decorative frame, characteristic of early Safavid hammered gold coinage. The deeply incised lettering displays the flowing, overlapping strokes typical of thuluth calligraphy applied to die-struck coinage of this period.
