| Reverse description | The reverse field is entirely covered by the Shi'a Kalimah in three lines of bold thuluth script, affirming the foundational tenets of Twelver Shi'a Islam. The legend reads: 'La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammad rasul Allah, Ali wali Allah' — there is no god but God, Muhammad is the Messenger of God, Ali is the Friend of God — the last phrase being the distinctive Shi'a addition that Shah Ismail I formally introduced onto Safavid coinage. The inscription is deeply struck and densely arranged, filling the irregular flan without a border, in keeping with the hammered technique of the early Safavid monetary tradition. |
