Additional information

Ahmed III came to power in 1703 on the back of the Edirne Event — a Janissary-led revolt that deposed his brother Mustafa II. The Tiflis mint, operating in what is now Tbilisi, Georgia, sat at the volatile edge of Ottoman administrative reach, contested repeatedly between Ottoman and Safavid Persian forces before Russia ultimately absorbed the region in the early nineteenth century. Gold struck there carries a geography that few Istanbul issues can claim.
