The VICTORIA NAVALIS reverse type commemorates the decisive Roman naval operations during the Jewish War of 66–70 AD, particularly the campaign on the Sea of Galilee in 67 AD, where Vespasian's forces annihilated the Zealot fleet under command of a force that had no real naval tradition to draw on. It was a lopsided engagement, and Josephus, who was present as a prisoner, recorded the lake running red. Vespasian issued this type in 71 to anchor his dynastic legitimacy to a concrete military victory before the fall of Jerusalem eclipsed everything else.
