Vespasian's VICTORIA NAVALIS coinage commemorates the naval victory at the Battle of Misenum in 69 AD, when Vespasian's forces secured the defection of the Classis Misenensis — Rome's most powerful fleet — from the Vitellian cause. This bloodless acquisition effectively ended Vitellius's ability to contest the civil war by sea and accelerated the Flavian march on Rome.
The S C issue was struck at Rome in Vespasian's second consulship. RIC II.1 #339 is among the less frequently encountered of the VICTORIA NAVALIS asses, appearing considerably more rarely in collections than the parallel sestertius denominations commemorating the same victory.
