Vespasian's reign opened with a fiscal crisis inherited from Nero's extravagance and four emperors' worth of civil war spending in a single year. The AEQVITAS AVGVSTI reverse type was a deliberate message: Vespasian was positioning himself as the restorer of equitable, honest government — a sharp contrast to the financial chaos of 68–69. The mint at Rome was working through a substantial bronze backlog in 71, with sestertii and asses produced in high volume to re-monetize a circulation pool badly disrupted by the Year of the Four Emperors.
