| Obverse description | Laureate head of Emperor Trajan facing right, the portrait rendered in the vigorous naturalistic style characteristic of the Trajanic imperial workshop of the early 2nd century AD. The bare-shouldered bust is executed in high relief with finely articulated hair visible beneath the laurel wreath, conveying the mature, authoritative physiognomy of the emperor. The continuous peripheral legend runs clockwise around the flan, incuse and clearly legible against the flat field. The strong modelling of the facial features — prominent brow, firm jawline, and resolute expression — reflects the official imperial portrait type established at the outset of Trajan's reign. |
