Titus reigned just over two years — long enough to oversee the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD and a devastating fire in Rome in 80 AD, yet short enough that his coinage is substantially less common than that of his father Vespasian or his brother Domitian. The AETERNIT AVG type was politically charged: invoking the eternity of an emperor who died at 41, possibly of fever, possibly by other means Domitian had reason to arrange.
RIC II.1 #217 belongs to the revised Carradice and Buttrey corpus, which significantly reorganized the Flavian series from the original RIC numbering.
