Beschrijving keerzijde A bull standing left, depicted in a sturdy, naturalistic provincial style with dewlap and tail visible. The animal stands on a plain groundline within the circular legend. The mint name CLVNIA appears prominently in the upper field, while the names of the four local magistrates (quattuorviri) — CN POMP, M AVO, T ANTO, and M IVL SERAN — are distributed around the periphery of the coin, attesting to the civic authority responsible for the issue.

Aanvullende informatie

Clunia — modern Coruña del Conde in Burgos province — was one of the few Hispano-Roman municipia still operating a bronze mint into the Tiberian period, when most provincial Spanish issues had already ceased. This piece belongs to a run of local aes coinage authorized under the magistrates named in the obverse legend, the quattuorviri whose names survive here almost by accident, preserved in metal long after the administrative machinery that appointed them dissolved.

Clunia would later gain prominence as the city where Galba was proclaimed emperor in 68 AD.
