Nero's aes coinage of this period was produced under a deliberate reform begun around 64 AD, when he reduced the weight standard of the bronze denominations — part of the same monetary adjustment that lightened the aureus and denarius. The S C on the reverse was not a rubber-stamp formality; it reflected the Senate's retained nominal authority over base-metal coinage, a constitutional fiction that both sides found convenient to maintain.

RIC 385 falls within the Rome mint output of Nero's later reign, before the chaos of 68 AD ended production under his authority entirely.
