| Reverse description | The reverse depicts the rectangular Temple of Janus Geminus shown in three-quarter perspective, its arched facade featuring a latticed window to the right and double-panelled doors to the left, with a festive garland draped across the closed doorway — symbolising the rare closure of the Janus temple in celebration of universal Roman peace. The senatorial authorisation mark S C (Senatus Consultum) appears prominently in the field, flanking the temple structure, as was standard on Imperial aes coinage. The encircling legend commemorates Nero's celebrated closing of the gates of Janus, an act performed only a handful of times in Roman history. The design is executed in low to moderate relief on an irregularly shaped bronze flan. |
