Obverse lettering IMP CAESAR TRAIANVS HADRIANVS AVG
(Translation: Imperator Caesar Traianus Hadrianus Augustus. Supreme commander (Imperator), Caesar, Trajan Hadrian, emperor (Augustus).)
Reverse description The personification of Britannia seated facing, her right foot resting upon a rock, drawing up the hood of a birrus Britannicus cloak with her right hand while her left arm leans upon a large oval shield resting on the ground; a spear is held in her left hand. The boss of the shield typically features a prominent spike. This reverse type, one of the earliest depictions of Britannia on Roman coinage, commemorates Hadrian's visit to Britain and the construction of his famous wall. The exergue and field carry the senatorial authority mark S C, while the legend surrounds the seated figure.
