The COS II dating places this as among Hadrian's earliest imperial bronzes, struck in 117 AD during the chaotic months following Trajan's death in Cilicia. Hadrian's succession was disputed — the deathbed adoption was announced by Trajan's wife Plotina, and several senators remained openly skeptical of its legitimacy. The early TR POT without numeral confirms this predates his first tribunician renewal in December 117, compressing the production window considerably.
