Reverse description A griffin seated to the right occupies the central field, depicted with lion's body, eagle's head, and prominent raised wings, its fore-paw slightly raised and tail curling upward, set upon a ground line. The griffin, closely associated with Apollo and emblematic of Hadrian's divine authority, is rendered with careful detail. The senatorial authorization mark S C (Senatus Consultum) appears in the lower field on either side of the ground line. The abbreviated consular legend COS III is distributed around the upper periphery, and the whole design is enclosed within a beaded border.
