Beschrijving voorzijde Bare laureate head of Emperor Galba facing right, with a globe depicted at the base of the neck truncation, a characteristic iconographic detail of his coinage. The portrait is rendered in a vigorous, realistic style typical of late Julio-Claudian and Flavian-era Roman die-cutting, conveying the emperor's aged features. The encircling legend runs clockwise from the lower left in Latin capitals within the outer border.

Aanvullende informatie

Galba's reign lasted seven months. The Spanish legions proclaimed him emperor in April 68 AD following Nero's suicide, but by January 3rd, 69 AD, the Rhine legions had already declared for Vitellius — and eleven days later Galba was murdered in the Roman Forum by Otho's men. The bronze coinage struck in his name is consequently scarce simply because the mint had so little time to produce it.

RIC I 509 belongs to the Rome mint series, struck in the chaotic final months before the Year of the Four Emperors consumed him entirely.
