Domitian's VICTORIAE AVGVSTI coinage of 86 AD commemorated his Dacian campaigns, wars he prosecuted personally and which he considered among his defining military achievements — whatever later senatorial historians chose to say about them. The campaigns ended not in conquest but in a negotiated settlement with Decebalus that Trajan would later cite as humiliating, yet Domitian celebrated it with a triumph regardless.
RIC II.1 498 is a reasonably well-documented type, though bronze sestertii and asses from Domitian's reign suffer disproportionate attrition from their heavy use in daily commerce throughout the empire's western provinces.
