Beschrijving voorzijde Laureate bust of Emperor Domitian facing right, wearing an aegis on the left shoulder, rendered in the vigorous portraiture style characteristic of Flavian imperial coinage. The effigy displays the emperor's distinctive features with a laurel wreath crowning his head. The encircling Latin legend runs clockwise around the entire periphery of the flan. The overall composition exemplifies the bold, high-relief die-cutting typical of late first-century Roman aes coinage.

Aanvullende informatie

Domitian's SALVTI AVGVST coinage of 84 AD falls within his early principate, before the increasingly autocratic tone of his later reign hardened into the titles and propaganda that would define — and ultimately damn — his memory. The Senate's posthumous damnatio memoriae in 96 AD meant that his bronzes were frequently defaced or melted; surviving examples with clear surfaces are rarer than mintage volumes would suggest.
