In her extended right hand she holds a pair of scales, symbolising equitable monetary standards, while her left hand cradles a cornucopiae, emblematic of abundance and imperial prosperity. The figure is rendered in the classical allegorical tradition common to Flavian bronze coinage, with drapery falling in naturalistic folds. The legend MONETA AVGVSTI is inscribed in the field around the figure, with the large senatorial authorisation letters S C flanking the exergual area, affirming the senate's sanction for this bronze emission. |

Domitian's MONETA AVGVSTI bronzes of 85 AD belong to a broader Flavian effort to reassert tight imperial control over the coinage after the disruptions of 69 AD's civil wars. Moneta — the divine personification of the mint itself — appearing on the reverse of a base-metal issue is a pointed declaration: the emperor, not the Senate, controlled the money supply, despite the S C formula that technically acknowledged senatorial authority over bronze coinage.
RIC II.1 #384 falls within a heavily catalogued group, and the revised RIC II.1 (2007 Carradice/Buttrey edition) substantially reorganized Domitianic aes attributions from the earlier volume.
