| 裏面の説明 | The goddess Fortuna rendered as a standing full-length figure facing left, depicted in flowing robes with fine drapery folds rendered in the classical Roman style. In her right hand she holds a rudder set upon a globe at her feet, symbolising the guidance of fate, while her left hand clasps a cornucopiae, emblem of abundance and prosperity. The legend FORTVNAE AVGVSTI is distributed in the field to the left and right of the figure, with the senatorial authorisation mark S C (Senatus Consulto) prominently placed in the lower field to either side of the goddess. The composition is typical of Domitianic orichalcum and bronze coinage produced at the Rome mint. |

Domitian's persistent use of Fortuna Augusta on his bronzes reflects a deliberate theological program — he styled himself dominus et deus, lord and god, and the regular invocation of imperial Fortune was less a pious gesture than a statement of personal divine favour. The Senate's posthumous damnatio memoriae in 96 AD ordered his images destroyed and his name erased, which accounts for the disproportionate number of these asses found with deliberately defaced or re-cut portraits.
