Clodius Albinus governed Britain and parts of Gaul as Caesar under Septimius Severus from 193, a political arrangement born purely of necessity — Severus needed his western flank secured while he dealt with Pescennius Niger in the east. The SAECVLO FRVGIFERO type, invoking a fruitful age, was issued during Albinus's second consulship and reflects the propagandistic optimism of a man who almost certainly already harbored imperial ambitions of his own. Severus had him declared emperor by the Senate in absentia just long enough to neutralize him, then moved against him the moment Niger was defeated.
Albinus was killed at the Battle of Lugdunum in February 197.
