Obverse description Bare-headed bust of Emperor Claudius facing left, depicted with a naturalistic portrait showing the characteristic features of the emperor including a broad neck and slightly furrowed brow. The effigy is rendered in the restrained Julio-Claudian style, with the truncation of the bust cut diagonally at the shoulder. The surrounding legend runs clockwise in Latin capitals, interrupted at the base of the portrait. The field is flat and the relief of the portrait is moderately high, typical of early imperial aes coinage struck at Rome.
