Additional information

Caesaraugusta — modern Zaragoza — was a veteran colony founded by Augustus, and its civic magistrates used coin issues partly as a form of public self-promotion. The duoviri named here, Scipione and Montano, are otherwise unattested in literary sources; the coins are among the only evidence that these men held office at all. Caligula's early reign prompted a wave of provincial loyalty issues across the Hispanic mints, most struck within the first year or two before his increasingly erratic behavior complicated such displays of devotion.

Caesaraugusta ceased striking bronze entirely after Caligula — this is among the final issues from that mint.
