Segobriga, situated in what is now Cuenca province, was granted the status of municipium under Augustus — likely in the 15–10 BC period when Roman administrative reorganization of Hispania Citerior was most intensive. The city's mint operated for a relatively short window, and its issues are tied directly to that civic promotion rather than to any continuous monetary tradition. Local magistrates' names appear on the coinage as part of the municipality's assertion of its new Roman legal standing.
Specimens from Segobriga circulated in a region with thin monetary infrastructure, which paradoxically preserved many in better condition than urban Iberian issues ground down by dense daily commerce.
