The emperor's features are idealized yet individualized, with the laurel wreath denoting his divine and imperial status. The encircling legend runs along the outer border of the flan. | Beschrijving keerzijde | The Ara Romae et Augusti, the federal altar of the three Gauls at Lugdunum (modern Lyon), depicted in frontal elevation as a richly ornamented rectangular structure. The altar's facade is decorated with a corona civica (civic crown of oak leaves) flanked by nude male figures on each side. Atop a tall column on either side of the altar stands a winged Victory, each holding a wreath. Struck at Lugdunum (modern Lyon), this as belongs to the long-running Altar of the Three Gauls series initiated around 10 BC to commemorate the dedication of the federal sanctuary to Rome and Augustus. The altar was the religious and political center of the three Gallic provinces — Aquitania, Belgica, and Lugdunensis — where delegates from sixty Gallic tribes assembled annually. Lugdunum itself was the capital of Roman Gaul and the site of the imperial mint serving the western provinces, making this a coin of genuine administrative consequence rather than a metropolitan prestige issue.
