背面描述 Central field displays the monogram PP over DD in large, bold lettering, standing for Pecunia Publica (public money) and Decreto Decurionum (by decree of the decurions). A continuous Latin legend encircles the central device, naming the two duovirs responsible for the issue alongside the title of the colony, Colonia Iulia Carthago. The bold, deeply struck central abbreviations are characteristic of colonial civic bronze coinage issued under Roman authority in Africa Proconsularis.

附加信息

The colonial duoviri coinage of Carthago — reconstituted as a Roman colony by Caesar and Augustus after the deliberate erasure of the Punic city — carries unusual political weight. The duoviri magistrates named on these bronzes were local officials whose coins functioned as a kind of civic advertisement, minted under permission granted by the emperor. By the time this as was struck, Carthago had been rebuilt for roughly six decades and was growing into one of the wealthiest cities in the western empire.

MAA 103 cross-references a tight group of these colonial bronzes with identifiable magistrate pairs, allowing attributions to specific years that the coins themselves do not state.
