Additional information

Calagurris — modern Calahorra in La Rioja — was one of the few Iberian municipalities granted the privilege of striking bronze coinage under Augustus, a right tied to its status as a Roman municipium following Caesar's reorganization of Hispania. The duoviri named in the legend, MN MEMMIVS and L IVNIVS, were local magistrates whose names appear on this issue as a mark of civic authority, a practice common in provincial coinage of the Augustan period but rare enough in Hispania to make each named pair historically traceable.
