Salvius Otho as one of the tresviri monetales, the board of three magistrates responsible for the production of coinage. The reverse exemplifies the standard Augustan aes coinage format, where the senatorial authorization mark SC dominates the design. The inscription is disposed in two registers around the field, with the moneyer's name and titles legible around the circumference. |

This as was struck under the moneyer Marcus Salvius Otho — father of the future emperor Otho, who would reign for just three months in 69 AD before losing the battle of Bedriacum to Vitellius and taking his own life. The moneying office held by the elder Salvius Otho was one of the minor magistracies Augustus deliberately retained from the Republic as a cosmetic gesture toward traditional governance, even as the mint's actual authority had long since passed to the emperor himself.
