Turiaso — modern Tarazona in the Ebro valley — was one of a handful of Hispanic municipalities granted the right to strike bronze coinage under Augustus, a privilege tied directly to the town's status as a Roman municipium. The magistrates named on this issue, recorded as IIviri, held the senior civic office responsible for authorizing the emission; their names appearing on the coinage was both an administrative formality and a public assertion of local Roman identity. The Iberian city had been issuing coins since the late Republican period, and the Augustan municipal series represents its final chapter of local production.
