Obverse description Bare radiate head of Divus Augustus facing right, rendered in the idealised portrait style characteristic of Julio-Claudian die-cutters and retained on Flavian restitution issues. The radiate crown, symbol of the deified emperor's solar associations, is rendered with finely engraved individual rays above the fillet. The portrait displays the classicising features traditionally associated with Augustus's official imagery. The encircling legend reads DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER distributed around the periphery of the flan.
