Colonia Victrix Iulia Lepida was founded around 44 BC as a Roman colonial settlement at the site of the Iberian town of Kelse, in the middle Ebro valley. The colony's name honored Marcus Aemilius Lepidus, then governor of Hispania Citerior and soon to be one of the three members of the Second Triumvirate. When Lepidus fell from political favor following his forced retirement in 36 BC, the colony was quietly renamed Colonia Victrix Iulia Celsa — erasing him from the civic identity entirely. Bronze issues attributable to the Lepida phase are correspondingly scarce.
