Ostur was a small Iberian settlement whose precise location remains disputed — most scholarship places it in the Guadalquivir valley, though no definitive archaeological identification has been made. The mint operated during the period of Roman consolidation following the Punic Wars, when dozens of Hispanian communities were authorized or compelled to strike bronze coinage partly to satisfy Roman fiscal demands and partly to facilitate local market exchange that Roman issues alone could not cover. The CNH#1 designation marks this as the type specimen for the series, carrying the full weight of that classification.
