Ilipense was one of several towns in the middle Guadalquivir valley issuing bronze coinage under Roman provincial authority during the second century BC, a practice that Rome tolerated — and in some cases encouraged — to ease the chronic shortage of small-denomination currency in Hispania Ulterior. The town's precise location remains disputed among Iberian numismatists, with candidates ranging from near modern Alcalá del Río to sites further upstream.
The ACIP classification places this issue within the broader corpus of Iberian Hispanic municipal bronzes catalogued by Villaronga and Benages.
