Ilipla was a town in the Anas River valley of Hispania Ulterior — modern Niebla in the province of Huelva — and its bronze coinage belongs to the broad wave of Hispanic autonomous issues that proliferated under loose Roman oversight following the Punic Wars. The town retained the right to strike its own bronze long after Rome had effectively consolidated the peninsula, a concession that reflects the pragmatic administrative flexibility Rome extended to cooperative Iberian communities during the second century BC.
ACIP 2370 places this issue within the heavier pre-reform weight standard, before Roman pressure gradually normalized Iberian civic bronzes downward.
