Charles III's claim to the Spanish throne — backed by England, the Dutch Republic, and Austria — required him to govern Catalonia as a functioning sovereign while the War of the Spanish Succession ground on around him. Minting small copper coinage was a practical assertion of that sovereignty, and the Barcelona mint struck these ardites continuously through his Catalan residency.
