The Guptas of Gauda were a regional offshoot of the imperial Gupta line, clinging to power in Bengal as the main dynasty collapsed under Huna pressure. Jayanaga Prakandayasas is among the least-documented rulers of this branch — his name survives almost entirely through his coinage rather than inscriptions or literary sources.
The debasement of the gold is telling. By the mid-seventh century, the Gauda rulers lacked the tributary income and trade revenue that had kept earlier Gupta issues at high fineness. This coin is effectively a fiscal document of that contraction.
