| Beschrijving keerzijde | Eagle standing facing, wings spread, head turned to the right, holding a wreath in its beak — a standard type associated with Syrian and Mesopotamian provincial coinage of the Severan period. Between the eagle's legs appears a small rectangular object of uncertain meaning, possibly a symbol or abbreviated civic reference. The Greek legend ΔΗΜΑΡΧ ΕΞ ΥΠΑΤΟϹ ΤΟ Δ, recording Caracalla's tribunician power and his fourth consulship, is distributed around the field. The bold, somewhat provincial rendering of the eagle typifies the local engraving tradition of the Rhesaena mint. |
