Diana Ephesia coinage under Hadrian connects directly to his well-documented tour of the eastern provinces, undertaken between 128 and 132 AD. Hadrian visited Ephesus personally, and the city responded with an outpouring of honorific issues. The cult of Artemis/Diana at Ephesus was one of the wealthiest religious institutions in the ancient world, and imperial acknowledgment of it carried serious political weight in Asia Minor.
