Ephesus held a uniquely privileged position among the cities of the Conventus of Ephesus, retaining the right to strike silver coinage — a concession Rome granted sparingly to provincial mints. This issue dates to the reign of Hadrian, who visited Ephesus during his extensive tour of the eastern provinces around 128–129 AD and is known to have taken a personal interest in the city's religious institutions, including the cult of Artemis, whose identification with Diana Ephesia was by then thoroughly syncretized in Roman administrative usage.
Provincial silver of this weight and fabric from Ephesus is considerably scarcer than the city's abundant bronze output.
