Obverse description Laureate and cuirassed bust of Caracalla facing left, depicted in three-quarter view from the front; the emperor holds a spear over his right shoulder with his right hand, while his left shoulder bears a large shield ornamented with an aegis. The legend encircles the bust in Greek characters, identifying the emperor by his imperial titulature. The portrait is rendered in the bold, assertive style characteristic of Severan provincial coinage from Mesopotamia.
