This tetradrachm was struck in year 14 of Tiberius's reign, the same year the emperor was consolidating his withdrawal to Capri — effectively abandoning Rome to Sejanus. The title ΘΕΟΣ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΣ references the deified Augustus, whose cult at Alexandria was by this point administratively embedded in the provincial coinage system. The Alexandrian mint operated under tight prefectural oversight, and its silver tetradrachms functioned as the dominant currency of Egypt, a province whose grain supply Rome could not afford to destabilize.
