| Obverse description | Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Macrinus facing right, seen from the front, with a full beard rendered in fine detail characteristic of his portraiture. The emperor wears a laurel wreath and military cuirass with visible paludamentum folds at the shoulder. The encircling Greek legend reads ΑΥ Κ Μ ΟΠΕΛ ϹΕΥ ΜΑΚΡΕΙΝΟϹ ϹΕ, arranged around the periphery of the flan. The strike is bold on an irregular, broad flan typical of provincial Mesopotamian coinage of the early third century AD. The portrait displays the vigorous, naturalistic style characteristic of Edessan civic issues under Roman imperial authority. |
