| Reverse description | A large eagle stands facing, wings fully spread, with its head turned to the right and a wreath held in its beak, rendered in the bold provincial style typical of Edessan coinage. Between the eagle's legs appears a small temple or shrine with a pediment, a motif closely associated with the religious imagery of Edessa. The reverse legend ΔΗΜΑΡΧ ΕΞ ΥΠΑΤΟϹ, denoting the tribunician power and consulship of Macrinus, is inscribed in the field. The composition fills the broad flan effectively, with the eagle's outstretched wings nearly reaching the edge. The overall design reflects the synthesis of Roman imperial titulature with local Mesopotamian artistic conventions. |
