Galba's Egyptian coinage occupies an almost paradoxical position in Roman provincial numismatics. Egypt, administered directly by the emperor's prefect rather than the Senate, was among the last provinces to formally acknowledge Nero's fall — the Alexandrian mint had been striking under Nero's name well into 68 AD. When Galba was finally recognized, the mint produced this silver tetradrachm during a reign that lasted barely seven months before his murder on the Palatine in January 69. The ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΑ reverse type — Freedom — carried pointed meaning: Galba had positioned his seizure of power as liberation from Neronian tyranny, a message the Alexandria mint dutifully propagated to its captive audience on the Nile.
