| Beschrijving keerzijde | An eagle is depicted frontally with wings spread wide, its head turned to the right and a wreath held in its beak, a motif emblematic of imperial apotheosis and divine favor in Roman provincial coinage. Between the eagle's legs stands a small shrine or naiskos with a pediment, rendered in outline. The surrounding Greek legend ΔΗΜΑΡΧ ΕΞ ΥΠΑΤΟϹ Τ Δ records Caracalla's tribunician and consular titles, serving as a dating element. The design follows the established iconographic conventions of the Edessan civic mint, which frequently employed the eagle-and-shrine type. The bold, somewhat stylized engraving is consistent with provincial workshop production in Mesopotamia during the Severan period. |
