Caesarea in Cappadocia — modern Kayseri — functioned as the administrative capital of the province and one of the few eastern mints authorized to strike silver under the Severan dynasty. The ΕΤ ΙΗ date formula, marking regnal year 18 of Septimius Severus, places this coin in 210 AD, just a year before his death at Eboracum during the British campaigns. Cappadocian silver of this period operated on a reduced didrachm standard, distinct from the Syrian tetradrachm coinage struck simultaneously at Antioch for the same emperor.
