The ship's prow is decorated in the classical manner, and the composition fills the flan with confident, economical engraving characteristic of Alexandrian provincial coinage. In the left field appears the regnal date formula L Η (Year 8), corresponding to the eighth year of Hadrian's reign, equivalent to 123–124 AD. The reverse type likely alludes to Hadrian's celebrated sea voyages and his visit to Egypt. |
