| Reverse description | A bireme or galley under full sail moves to the right across the field, its oars clearly rendered beneath the hull and the billowing sail dominating the upper portion of the design. The ship's prow is decorated in the classical manner, and the composition fills the flan with confident, economical engraving characteristic of Alexandrian provincial coinage. In the left field appears the regnal date formula L Η (Year 8), corresponding to the eighth year of Hadrian's reign, equivalent to 123–124 AD. The reverse type likely alludes to Hadrian's celebrated sea voyages and his visit to Egypt. |
