| 表面の説明 | Draped and cuirassed bust of Emperor Trajan facing right, crowned with a radiate crown, with an aegis visible on the left shoulder. A six-pointed star is positioned in the lower right field. The Greek imperial titulature legend runs around the periphery in a single line. The portrait is rendered in the characteristic Alexandrian provincial style, with bold, slightly stylised facial features. |

Year 20 of Trajan's reign — the final regnal year before his death at Selinus in August 117 — places this tetradrachm at the very end of his administration of Egypt. Trajan never visited the province, but his final years saw the Jewish revolt of 115–117 devastate Alexandria's population and disrupt much of the administrative and commercial machinery that Egyptian coinage depended on.
The billon content of Alexandrian tetradrachms had been declining steadily since Nero's debasement of the series in 64–65 AD, and by this point the coins were largely fiduciary currency accepted on imperial authority rather than metal value.
