Obverse description Laureate, cuirassed bust of the emperor Severus Alexander facing right, with paludamentum visible at the shoulder, rendered in the Alexandrian provincial style. The effigy displays youthful features characteristic of this emperor's portraiture. A Greek imperial legend surrounds the bust, reading Α ΚΑΙ ΜΑ ΑΥΡ ϹΕΥ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟϹ ΕΥ, abbreviating his titulature as Augustus and Caesar. The flan is irregular, typical of Alexandrian tetradrachm coinage of the Severan period.

Additional information

Year eight of Severus Alexander's reign fell during a period of relative administrative stability in Egypt — the emperor had consolidated power after the violent end of Elagabalus and was managing the province through a functioning prefectural system. That calm wouldn't last: by the early 230s, the Sasanian threat in the east was already building toward the campaigns that would consume the reign and eventually kill him. Alexandrian billon tetradrachms of this regnal year survive in reasonable numbers, suggesting uninterrupted mint output under the prefect without the production gaps visible in some neighboring years.
