Year 19 of Hadrian's reign corresponds to 134–135 AD, falling squarely within the aftermath of the Bar Kokhba revolt — the third and most devastating Jewish uprising against Rome, which had concluded just two years earlier and left Judaea so depopulated that Hadrian renamed the province Syria Palaestina. Alexandria, as the administrative and commercial hub of Roman Egypt, continued striking its distinctive billon tetradrachms on a closed currency system: Egyptian coinage could not leave the province, and foreign coin had to be exchanged at state-controlled trapezae upon entry.
The ΕΝΝΕΑΚ·Δ regnal date formula is characteristic of Alexandrian dating practice, rendering the Egyptian year in Greek. Milne's sequence places this issue within a well-documented run.
